The history of the religious place named is as sacred as the place itself. In the great epic, Mahabharata, mountains around the holy site are mentioned. It is said that the heroes of Mahabharata, Pandavas put an end to their life by ascending the slopes of a peak named Swargarohini in western Garhwal. If legend has to be believed, the Pandavas passed through Badrinath for reaching Swargarohini. There is a place named Mana, just 4 kms from Badrinath where saint Vyas wrote Mahabharata inside a cave.

Badrinath occupies an important place in Skanda. It is mentioned that there is no shrine like Badrinath. This religious site is also known as Bhu Vaikunta or earthly abode of Lord Vishnu. The place was popular shrine during the Vedic age.

Badrinath was visited by a large number of religious scholars namely Vedanta Desaka, Ramanujacharya and Madhwacharya.
